I have too many cameras.

I’m getting ready to move again next year. I already started what I like to call “consolidating my assets”, by that I mean throwing away or taking a bunch of stuff to the thrift store.

In 2009 I bought my first DSLR, I went Canon XS aka KISS. A few years later, I got another 1000D from Craigslist and used it to experiment with 3D pictures by triggering both cameras at the same time one besides the other. It was fun, but that was it. Then I bought a Canon Rebel Digital. What model? Rebel Digital, the first rebel digital, that’s it. I bought it used from Craigslist again, just because they were selling it with a bunch of lenses. I’ve never used it. I also bought a Rebel XTI and a Rebel 35mm for the same reason.

I just bought a new Canon 90D. This one is definitely going to be my main camera. That got me thinking about what should I do with the rest.

I should give away the Rebel Digital and the 35mm to the thrift store. They are not much, but they’re definitely usable, especially good to learn about photography on a budget. The Rebel Digital is going to be a collector’s item at some point.

The XTI is probably going to end up as my throw bag camera to use and abuse. The one that I would keep in my car just in case I need it. I still want a capable camera that takes great pictures, but that I wouldn’t care as much as the 90D if it breaks. Not that I’m not going to take care of it, but I’m not ready to take the new one with me on a Kayak trip, for example.

Now, I have plans for the two Rebel XS. I want to convert them into long-term time-lapse cameras. I want to fit them into a 50 caliber ammo boxes with big batteries and just leave them somewhere taking pictures for days. It is a risk, but they have serve me well, and I wouldn’t cry if someone steals them. It would be interesting to have time-lapses from different angles of the same subject.

In conclusion, I’m a camera hoarder.
